Soaring food prices add to turmoil in North Africa & the Middle East

[10/03/11]

World food prices have hit new records as unrest in the Middle East and North Africa has escalated in recent weeks. The UNs Food and Agriculture Organisations (FAOs) Food Price Index rose to 236 points in February from 231 points in January, the highest level since monitoring began in 1990.

Last year, Dexia AM published an SRI research paper which examined the burgeoning issue of food scarcity, both a catalyst of unrest and a driver of inflation. The paper not only focuses on the challenges but also on tangible solutions: it identifies the drivers behind the issue of food scarcity, illustrates previous and potential conflicts, examines current actions being taken to address the issue and highlights opportunities for companies involved in increasing agricultural productivity.
